Women can slay their own dragons, right? Definitely. In fact, Princess Elodie does more than just slay, in the dark fantasy movie Damsel
Damsel peaked at 50.8 million views during the first week on Netflix and shot up to the global top 10 most-watched films list.
While strong female characters are no doubt killing it on the screen nowadays, the character Elodie takes it to a whole new level. Resilient? Check. Fighter? Check. Strong-minded? Clever? Check. Check.
What makes her stand out and her arc that interesting? It’s intriguing than you think. Damsel is a fabulous movie of a princess not having a traditional fairytale with blue skies, balls and prince charming.
And even better, a dynamic story of falling into pitch darkness to soar like a dragon (pun intended😬)
Let’s see what makes princess Elodie and Damsel movie so good:
Unforgotten Strength Lies Beneath

From the start, princess Elodie stands apart as a woman who is concerned about her kingdom and her people. She is doing all the hard work to make sure they are taken care of.
In contrast to seeing her on a royal bed with her head in clouds. Or in a ballroom bowing at her suitors. This becomes a foundation for what she has underneath. And what she can be, if her world turns upside down.
This becomes important as her situation takes a comprising turn. She is compelled to marry a prince of a prosperous kingdom for the well being of her people.
As a selfless princess she agrees to make the best of her situation. Not out of helplessness, but more of a empathetic need to help her kingdom.
Falling Into Darkness And Death

Did I say her initiall portrayal complements her arc when her world spins?
It does, because her entire world spins horrifyingly😨! And that’s when the time arrives for her to remember the strength that lies beneath.
Imagine being held lovingly in the arms of someone whom you have just given your trust. And then being thrown by that same person as sacrificial lamb to a monster?
Terrifying? Absolutely. And it was the same for Elodie.
She is now surrounded by darkness. Despair breaks her spirit, her hopes are crushed and strength is trapped by the binds of shimmering jewels on her body.
Cinderella’s Dead. I am Alive Now

When you have laid your old self in a casket and shut it, what’s next to be done?
Rise from the ashes of course. And so, does Elodie rise? She rises a lot more than all the viewers expectations!
She stumbles so many times that’d have made you say, ‘No more I am done.’ But she does not. Her strategy fails so many times to the point of nearing death. Does she give up? Never.
She gets so close to being eaten alive where you shout ‘No! Someone help her!!’. But even then Eloide‘s like ‘You won’t get to me!’
So, she fights, she dares to escape, falls, hurts, cries. But does she slay the monster and make it out alive?
Princess With Her Own Dragon

This is where Damsel exceeds expectations👌🏻
While Elodie is strong and resilient, she surpasses in intelligence too. She finds out what were the events that lead to her tragic situation.
Her entire being was reduced to a mere sacrifice for a vicious legend-old monster. Or, was it?
Elodie turns her tragic fate into her own tale of a warrior queen.
Damsel movie is an awesome visual storytelling treat if you want your dose of fantasy in all its best dark glory! Eloide is bound to win your heart, whether in a regal robe or warrior’s armour✨
And Millie Brown delivers a performance that is striking and fantastic. If you haven’t watched already, stream Damsel on Netflix.
