The Sandman, a global phenomenon, based on award-winning Neil Gaiman‘s comic book series, has taken viewers by storm, since it’s premiere on 5 Aug.
This fascinating fantasy series, with breath-taking visuals, mythology, realms and engaging storylines caught us in it’s magic for all 10 episodes. And hooked us completely in the bonus episode! Now we are impatient for season 2. Shocker!
The star of The Sandman, the charismatic brooding Dream King, Morpheus has become an enigmatic obsession for so many fans.
Let’s dive into what makes him so captivating in the Netflix show:
Alluring Presence
From the beginning, Dream of the Endless exudes a quiet commanding presence most effortlessly, with his deep voice and chilling stare, that makes you feel it peers right into the souls of mortals.
What makes his presence so captivating – he can be quite frightening when he wills it, without so much as lifting a finger. Morpheus’s every scene screams ‘less is more’ perfectly! He journeys across different worlds and dimensions with such an intense cold aloofness.
Morpheus exhibits a charismatic inner nature that exudes an unfailing strength in his powers amidst whatever chaos he is standing in. His presence is both deeply mystic and darkly magnetic.
It’s the mystery of his omnipotent yet humanly nature (which Tom Sturridge has beautifully portrayed) that enraptures us; where we go obsessed trying to figure him out.
Intriguing Dichotomy
A beautiful round character, Morpheus shows no willingness to allow any feelings, to connect or display any affection, yet he unexpectedly reveals deep capacity for affection . And Lucienne, his closest and the most loyal guardian of his realm, knows it well.
As seen in his interactions with his raven Mathew, he is unwilling to let him tag along as he does not want any harm to befall him. He holds his former raven Jessamy‘s memory tenderly.
Mathew brings out Morpheus‘s vulnerability unknowingly who is otherwise so intensely guarded. He shows a different, softer side towards his sister Death too.
Johanna Constantine brings out his emotions differently. He is able to see past her sarcastic bluster, her goodness. Which is why he ends up taking away the nightmare that constantly troubled her.
Rose Walker and Morpheus:
He certainly takes a liking to Rose Walker and does not wish to end her life even though he is burdened by that responsibility. Despite the fate of Rose being a threat as the Vortex, his interactions with her are not intimidating.
What makes his relationship with Rose so intriguing in the show, is that she is so selfless, open and sincere, he’s naturally disarmed by her. Rose brings out his softer side easily, in many instances. A constant reminder for him to see in humans what he once used to see, before what he was forced to witness in his brutal captor.
When the good-hearted Rose willingly agrees to die for saving the waking world, it melts the cold-hearted Morpheus. He even invites her to live in The Dreaming realm after her death should she wish to.

Compelling Evolving Arc
Morpheus‘s journey is certainly interesting and one-of-a-kind. His traumatic experience with his captor has left him more guarded and unfeeling to human lives and emotions. Also, he distances himself from feeling, to not be consumed by the collective unconscious of all mortals.
Sometimes unwilling to listen or change, Morpheus has been on the edge of making improper decisions and leaving his close ones feeling unloved for their loyalty.
His journey back to feeling the immense affection he definitely has for all beings, is a story waiting to unfold cosmically (no pun intended). His character has so much room for growth and a wonderful storyline just waiting to take us by storm again in coming seasons. And we can all agree by the end of the season one that he is on his way.
The bonus episode The Sandman: Calliope portrayed that he certainly is and also gave a beginning arc perfectly for season 2. What he did for Calliope was reflective of his evolution and a perfect epilogue that ends season 1 on a compelling note.
